Nearly anything you can find at the shops, you can find online - and at a discount. It used to be a bit harder to find just the right thing - the online sales were mostly through obscure little web sites that offered big discounts on last year’s designer clothes lines and women’s shoes, but that’s no longer the case. Online discount shopping is not only more popular than ever, it’s now chic to buy your name brand and designer clothes through the internet.

Online shopping is an enormous industry, and with good reason.  No other shopping method offers more convenience, better prices and range, or better information access than shopping on the internet. However, it pays to take precautions when shopping online.

The Internet revolution has changed the way a whole generation approaches the concept of shopping.  No longer do people have that insatiable urge to touch before they buy. If people are getting hefty cashbacks and good discounts online, why shouldn’t they do most of their shopping via the Internet?

Ensure Site Uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

When ordering from a website, one of the first things you should check is to see that their order page is secure. The page you enter your address and contact details on doesn’t need to be secure, but the page you enter your credit card on should be.

The easiest way to tell that a page is secure is that it will start with https://.  Also, in Internet Explorer, you’ll see a yellow padlock at the bottom of your browser window.

Many online shopping sites offer 1 or 2 day shipping, and if your looking for just the right gift, most offer gift certificates that can be mailed to the recipient or yourself.

Check the Merchant’s Reputation

You should also do at least a little research to ensure that the website you are ordering from is a reputable, dependable merchant. There are several ways to check on the reputation of a merchant: Are they listed with the Better Business Bureau? Are they members of any other third party verification entities?  Check their customer reviews on third party sites like Alexa.com, BizRate.com, and Shopzilla.com

If you’re purchasing from a seller on an online marketplace like Ebay or Amazon Marketplace, check their ratings and customer feedback. Most online marketplaces offer some kind of a guarantee against fraud for orders placed on their website.

One big advantage of online shopping is that there is no need to worry about the opening and closing hours. There is no need to hurry from your work place to make your purchase before closing hours. Shopping hours are non-existent. The online stores will be open 24/7 every day of the year.

Read the Company Policy

Also check on the companies policies before you order from them. You should check that they have at least some kind of a guarantee and return policy. Also, how quickly do they ship orders? What customer service do they offer? Do they have full contact info on their website, including their physical address and phone number?

With a little research, you can save some time and money by shopping online – and not worry about not getting your money’s worth!
