The idea of turning the Nano into a watch is one thing, but actually making it look and feel right is completely another. Enter Scott Wilson, formerly the global creative director for Nike Watches. He’s the man behind TikTok and LunaTik, well-designed, engineered and manufactured watch kits that snuggly and beautifully cradle your Nano.

TikTok is the cheaper version with a plastic band and a snap-in frame inspired by the locking mechanisms in skiboots. The LunaTik is the nicer, more premium offering – it’s forged from Aerospace Grade Aluminum and then machined via CNC into its final form. “The straps are made from high grade silicone rubber and the hardware is solid stainless steel not some chrome plated brass that will wear off. The quality of these watch cases and straps will be scrutinized very carefully and produced in the same factories that produce the best watches for companies like Nixon, Diesel, Vestal, and Nike.”

The shingles, which can be incorporated into rooftops alongside traditional asphalt shingles, use low-cost thin-film cells of copper indium gallium diselenide. While Dow expects to profit greatly from the Powerhouse Solar Shingle — the company predicts it will bring in as much as $10 billion in revenue by 2020 — there will be significant benefits for consumers too. The innovative shingle is expected to cost 10% to 15% less than traditional solar panels and will be cheaper and quicker to install.

Nokia unveiled its latest challenge to the iPhone today, the N97, as the Finnish mobile giant vowed it would transform the internet.

The touchscreen smartphone, which has a 3.5 inch screen and both a touchscreen and a glide-out Qwerty keyboard, is the latest handset in Nokia’s N series. It follows the blockbuster N95, the handset which has so far sold 15 million, and the N96, which was released earlier this year.

The N97 is the latest handset to join an increasingly crowded smartphone market that includes the G1, which runs Google’s Android software, the BlackBerry Storm, which went on sale last month, and Sony Ericsson’s X1.

Nokia claims the N97, which is due to be released by the middle of next year, is “the world’s most advanced mobile computer” and will boast new services that will transform the way people connect to the internet.

The phone comes with 32 GB of memory – more than twice the capacity of the most powerful iPhone on the market – with the option to expand this to 48 GB with a 16 GB memory card. This means it can store thousands more songs, or hours more video, than its rivals (up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video playback to be precise).

In a gentle dig at Apple, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s executive vice president of markets, who unveiled the phone, made the point that the N97 can access “the entire internet, not just piece of it” as, unlike the iPhone, it will be able to play the Flash videos used on many websites.

In another move that makes the N97 more like a mini-computer than a phone, the screen tilts to a 35 degree angle when the keyboard glides out, making it easier to see the screen while typing. It is a nice touch. I tried it out: your forefingers fit snuggly behind the screen making it more stable to hold and therefore easier to type. Unlike other slide-out Qwerty keyboards, as seen on handsets such as the G1 or the HTC Touch Pro, which feel quite clunky as they move into place, the N97 really does glide, or almost pivot, out. It is a very satisfying movement.

Like most of its rivals the N97 will run over HSDPA, the fastest type of mobile broadband, with speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, and, although this is a feature surprisingly absent in the Storm, the N97 is wifi enabled.

While the hardware is impressive, it is the software that Nokia executives are most excited about and which they say will let users personalize the internet.

The N97 will sport internet widgets that can be moved around with your finger to personalize your home screen and a Nokia Messaging button – a single application that will enable you to access any webmail, e-mail and Instant Messenger accounts you might have.

The N97 also introduces so-called “SoLo”, or social location, making it easier to update social networks automatically with real-time information. The phone’s integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass means it knows exactly where it is, and, if your friends allow it to, will know where they are too, opening up new possibilities for gaming and applications.

The Panasonic LUMIX G1 is as easy to use as a compact digital camera, with the photo quality of a digital SLR camera. It’s a new-generation digital interchangeable lens camera that does away with the mirror box and is the world’s first Micro Four Thirds System camera.

The G1′s Full-time Live View lets you see in the LCD how adjusting the exposure, white balance, aperture or shutter speed will affect the photo. This kind of live view shooting is not possible with conventional digital SLR cameras.

The G1 aintroduces the Micro Four Thirds System standard, an extended version of the Four Thirds System standard for digital camera systems. Using this standard, and developing a camera body that eliminates the mirror box and optical viewfinder unit, Panasonic has managed to reduce lens mount diameter by 6 mm and shorten the distance between the lens mount and image sensor by about half. The result is a digital interchangeable lens camera that’s both extremely compact and highly mobile.

If you’ve hesitated to buy a digital SLR camera because you think they’re hard to use, your wait is over. Intelligent Auto mode activates 6 detection and compensation functions that work automatically, leaving you free to just aim and shoot.

Shake detection – MEGA O.I.S.
Helps prevent blurring when the camera shakes.

Motion detection – Intelligent ISO Control
Helps prevent blur caused by subject motion.

Light detection – Intelligent Exposure
Adjusts the brightness of dark areas in the image.

Advanced Face - Detection Face Detection AF/AE
Helps deliver clear portraits.

Scene detection - Intelligent Scene Selector
Selects the optimal scene mode for the situation.

Subject detection - AF Tracking
AF Tracking follows moving subjects and adjusts accordingly.

The 3.0-inch LCD rotates 180° horizontally and 270° vertically, making it easy to capture dynamic shots from extreme angles without getting into awkward positions. When the lighting around you changes, the LCD back lighting level automatically changes so you get comfortable, easy-on-the-eyes viewing at all times.

In My Color mode you can adjust the color, brightness and saturation while checking changes live giving you control over how your image will look.

Like using different film type in a standard camera, you can enjoy a wide range of expression based on six color modes and three monochromatic modes. When the multi-film mode is selected, you can record pictures having up to three different effects with each press of the shutter button.

The G1 shoots wide-screen, 16:9, full-HD images. These images are simply breathtaking when displayed on an HDTV, which handles about four times the data of a standard-definition TV. Enjoy a whole new style of HDTV viewing with family and friends.

I have to replace my phone almost monthly so this is the most useful product I have seen in a long while.

Guinness World Records have confirmed the title after seeing the phone put through its paces. Earlier this year it was dropped from a height of 10 feet, sprayed with water from a high velocity jet and even placed in a cement mixer.

Guinness World Records then examined the handset and said only superficial cosmetic damage would be tolerated, even a small crack in the screen would have jeopardised the record attempt. Unlike my phone – which seems to shatter into 27 different pieces if I even look at it in the wrong way – the JCB Toughphone passed the tests.

Makers say the mobile can operate at temperatures from -20c to +60c and be dropped, shocked, splashed and covered in dust, all without missing a call. A spokesperson for JCB said: “The market has been demanding a no-nonsense mobile that can handle the knocks of an active lifestyle as well as dealing with the rigors of life on a building site.”

I reckon this is the coolest digital picture frame I’ve seen. It has all the usual things you’d expect from a digital frame, clock and alarm function, accepts multiple media card formats, MP3 player, etc. etc..

It is also Wi-Fi enabled so can pull pictures from GMail, Flicker or you can email them directly to the frame. You can use Windows Live to display News, Weather and traffic info and something that I’ve not seen on a digital frame before is it’s touch screen so setting up and entering your wireless information should be a lot less fiddly (though you may see the odd thumbprint on your pics).

Unlike other digital photo frames that just accept memory cards and show photos, the iGala has a brain inside its rectangular head. Use the touchscreen interface to configure the iGala to connect to your wi-fi network, then the iGala can do all kinds of smart things like login to a Gmail account and display any e-mailed photos on its hi-res 800×600 screen.

Of course the iGala can pull your photos automatically from Flickr and you can connect to Windows Live FrameIt if you’re looking for a free web based interface to automatically push photos, news and traffic to your frame. No PC is required because the iGala is essentially a mini touchscreen computer running Linux.
