For creating such unusual memory keys in steampunk style you would need some wood, a few old pocket watches and a lot of talent and creativity. All memory keys featured below were created by an artist from the United Kingdom under the name, back2root. The covers of these USB drives are made out of different types of wood such as Ebony, Padauk and even such exotic wood as Tiger Myrtle. The creation of each device takes up to 12 hours and the parts of up to 8 old pocket watches. The beautiful results of this labour of love can bee seen below. Enjoy!

At 33mm x 16mm (about 1.3 x 0.6 inches), Buffalo’s adapter is small enough to attach to smaller devices or to remain attached to a laptop when it is stored in a notebook bag. The wireless adapter will allow users to connect to the Internet from devices such as Sony’s PSP, Nintendo’s DS and many smartphones, including the iPhone.

Thanks to Buffalo’s AirStation OneTouch Secure System (AOSS) feature, users can press a button to enable Wi-Fi Protected Setup and have the WiFi adapter automatically detect and configure compatible wireless routers with a secure connection. The company estimates transfer speeds as fast as 150Mbps.

The WLI-UC-GN will sell for the equivalent of about $24 when it launches in Japan early in February. Buffalo sells some devices in the US but hasn’t disclosed international plans.

Toshiba rolls out first 512GB notebook SSD

Toshiba late Wednesday said it has set a record for flash storage with the first-ever 2.5-inch 512GB solid-state drive. It makes use of the company’s newest 43 nanometer assembly process and particularly dense multi-level cell storage to double the 256GB record only just set earlier this year. The capacity boost also comes alongside faster performance; Toshiba sees peak read speeds of 240MB per second and write speeds of 200MB per second. Longevity is also a focus with a mean time between failures of one million hours (114 years), though the cells themselves will typically wear out sooner.

AES encryption is also an option to lock down the drive, which plugs into a typical SATA notebook drive bay.

The range-topping drive also comes alongside physically smaller 1.8-inch drives that take advantage of the new memory inside ultraportable notebooks and include 64GB, 128GB and 256GB versions. All of the drives will be ready to test for PC makers sometime during winter 2009 and should be mass-produced for shipping systems during the spring.

Nokia unveiled its latest challenge to the iPhone today, the N97, as the Finnish mobile giant vowed it would transform the internet.

The touchscreen smartphone, which has a 3.5 inch screen and both a touchscreen and a glide-out Qwerty keyboard, is the latest handset in Nokia’s N series. It follows the blockbuster N95, the handset which has so far sold 15 million, and the N96, which was released earlier this year.

The N97 is the latest handset to join an increasingly crowded smartphone market that includes the G1, which runs Google’s Android software, the BlackBerry Storm, which went on sale last month, and Sony Ericsson’s X1.

Nokia claims the N97, which is due to be released by the middle of next year, is “the world’s most advanced mobile computer” and will boast new services that will transform the way people connect to the internet.

The phone comes with 32 GB of memory – more than twice the capacity of the most powerful iPhone on the market – with the option to expand this to 48 GB with a 16 GB memory card. This means it can store thousands more songs, or hours more video, than its rivals (up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video playback to be precise).

In a gentle dig at Apple, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s executive vice president of markets, who unveiled the phone, made the point that the N97 can access “the entire internet, not just piece of it” as, unlike the iPhone, it will be able to play the Flash videos used on many websites.

In another move that makes the N97 more like a mini-computer than a phone, the screen tilts to a 35 degree angle when the keyboard glides out, making it easier to see the screen while typing. It is a nice touch. I tried it out: your forefingers fit snuggly behind the screen making it more stable to hold and therefore easier to type. Unlike other slide-out Qwerty keyboards, as seen on handsets such as the G1 or the HTC Touch Pro, which feel quite clunky as they move into place, the N97 really does glide, or almost pivot, out. It is a very satisfying movement.

Like most of its rivals the N97 will run over HSDPA, the fastest type of mobile broadband, with speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, and, although this is a feature surprisingly absent in the Storm, the N97 is wifi enabled.

While the hardware is impressive, it is the software that Nokia executives are most excited about and which they say will let users personalize the internet.

The N97 will sport internet widgets that can be moved around with your finger to personalize your home screen and a Nokia Messaging button – a single application that will enable you to access any webmail, e-mail and Instant Messenger accounts you might have.

The N97 also introduces so-called “SoLo”, or social location, making it easier to update social networks automatically with real-time information. The phone’s integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass means it knows exactly where it is, and, if your friends allow it to, will know where they are too, opening up new possibilities for gaming and applications.

Buy a LifeBook laptop from Fujitsu Siemens, and they will give you a new laptop every three years. The requirements are that you need to buy a three-year extended warranty, can only upgrade using Fujitsu parts, and must return your existing laptop in good condition with the original receipt.

As part of the scheme, Fujitsu will give LifeBook customers a new laptop of the same value as the one they originally bought plus 10% to cover inflation. More importantly, the new laptop will be equipped with updated hardware and software.

To qualify, customers must register their new laptop within 21 days of purchase. Then, customers are part of the program for life, but they cannot pass on the deal in a will. Fujitsu is also limiting purchases to 10 laptops per person or business.

Although it seems like the company is giving away laptops, Fujitsu says that it will make money by selling other goods, services, and accessories to its lifetime customers. For instance, customers may want to invest in a Fujitsu insurance pack to protect their laptop against theft and accidental damage.

Fujitsu says that the Laptop4Life program underscores its high level of confidence in its technology.

What we are talking about is HP’s new 25.5” LCD touchscreen all-in-one PC.

Within the HP TouchSmart IQ810 lies an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GBs of RAM, 500GBs of storage and an NVIDIA 9600M graphics card. It has a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. There is also a Blu-ray drive for entertainment and those time when you just don’t want to work. The IQ810 comes equipped with Media Center allowing you to record and play your favorite shows if you so desire.

The IQ810 is wall-mountable and it comes with audio outputs in case you want to add some larger home speakers to the system. It’s an all-in-one PC so there is no tower to lug around, the entire system is built into the display housing.

All in all the IQ810 PC doesn’t leave much to complain about.

As files continue to grow in size and number, and demand for easy accessibility to these files begins to take hold, people are turning to networked storage solutions. The WD ShareSpace by Western Digital is one such solution, providing ease of use and flexibility in one useful package. It is available in 2TB and 4TB models ($700 and $1000, respectively). This raid 5 configured system comes with a host of useful features.

The system connects to your network via USB 2.0 or Firewire 400, making it compatible with Vista or Mac OSX. You can directly attach other storage to the box and with one push of a button instantly copy all the data from the attached drive into the shared network storage. The ShareSpace also have built in FTP support, can act as an iTunes server, and will send e-mails to a user-designated account should any problems be detected. Even better, the ShareSpace is 33% more energy efficient than other comparable models, making it one of the quietest and greenest networked storage solutions available.

Be sure to check out the full list of features on the ShareSpace product page.

Not ones to be outdone, Kingston has just seriously upped the capacity of their thumb drives to 64GB. Now, that is a significant amount of data storage, right there. And even though it might seem excessive to some, it really will be useful to those with on-the-go data needs.

The DataTraveler 150 now has a storage capacity of 64GB, adding a boost to all previous portable pocket drives. Now, it might be a bit unnecessary if you tote around an external hard drive, too. But if you rely on a flash drive for your portable back up, then this may very well be the storage solution for you.

It’s not going to be cheap to back up your data on this DataTraveler 150, however. Expect to pay $177 for this gadget. The smaller 32GB thumb drive costs $116. They make great stocking stuffers, that’s for sure.
